Imagine the rising generation filled with the idea that honor and distinction lie in the way of doing the thing that is hard and of service to one’s fellow-men, and not at all in the way of beating an adversary and sending him down to defeat; and then picture, if you can, another form of revolution — the American republic with a new kind of social tissue, with our men of light and leading finding full field for an emulation nobler than any we have known, our captains of industry achieving triumphs that have in them no implication of some one else’s defeat, and winning victories that have caused no other man to fall.
