Scarlet by first dyeing yellow, then dipping in red. Nearly every tree bark, root bark and fruit has a peculiar dye of its own which may be brought out by boiling, and intensified with vinegar, ^alt, alum, iron or uric salts. Experiments usually produce surprises.
