6. FABACE^ — PEA FAMILY
Black or Yellow Locust, Silver Chain. {Robinia Pseudacacia) A tall forest tree, up to 80 feet high: leaves 8 to 14 inches long; leaf- lets 9 to 19, I to 2 inches long; pods 2 to 4 inches long, 4 to 7 seeded. Wood greenish-brown, very strong and durable; much used for posts: weight 46 lbs. per cubic foot. "The leaves are used in some parts of Europe, either fresh or cured, as nourishment for horses; the seeds are found very nutritious to fowls.
