19 The Torch of Fortitude BE BRAVE: Courage is the noblest of all attainments. BE SILENT: While your elders are speaking and otherwise show them deference. OBEY: Obedience is the first duty of the Woodcrafter. The Coup Feather for the Torch of Fortitude is brown. Brown is the color of the earth from which the Indian de- rived much of his nourishment. The Earth gave life to his crops and grew food for the animals. The Indian symbol for fortitude is a strong band around the heart. Bravery was universally admired among the Indians. Vigorous living and outdoor sports trained them for a better life and gave them the courage to face any hardship. Courage is the spirit way of Woodcraft.
