Officers of the Tribe CLAN CHIEFS CHIEF A member of the Tribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide. He acts as a representa- tive of the members, conducts the Council, and helps the Guide con- duct the work of the Tribe. SECOND CHIEF A member of the Fribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide. He cooperates with the Chief in conducting the work of the Tribe, and takes charge of Council in the absence of the Chief. TALLY KEEPER A member of the Tribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide, to act as Secretary and keep the Tally. WAMPUM KEEPER A member of the Tribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide, to keep the Treasurer's record. INDIAN RUNNER A member of the Tribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide. He does all the odd jobs about the Council, directs seating of tribal members and greets guests and late-comers. FIRE KEEPER A member of the Tribe, elected by the Tribe, with the approval of the Guide. He lights the Central Fire for the Law Ceremony and exting- uishes the fire and destroys sand painting after the Council. He acts as custodian of the fire cloth or board. A Tribe should be divided into two or more Clans depend- ing upon the membership. Each Clan elects a Clan Chief and he holds the same position in his Clan as does the Chief in the Tribe.
